Let them eat cake...

We decided to call Savannah's birthmom at the last minute and arrange for her to come and visit around Savannah's birthday. So, I pulled out all the stops. I planned a BBQ for 8 people complete with hamburgers, buns, chips, potato salad, and........

I bought a cake!!

Well, I actually only partially bought a cake. I had been toying with the idea of buying a cake from Publix's bakery. I had heard that their cakes were pretty good. So I plunged in full throttle and made the commitment. I dialed the number and considered the plethora of cake options and I chose my poison......a vanilla cake with strawberry spread and fresh strawberries and buttercream frosting.

The woman on the phone asked me what colors I would like the roses to be. I thought, "WOW, I get to choose colors." I haven't had this much fun "making" a cake in years. I asked her if they had any tinkerbell designs and she said that they couldn't do Disney characters in icing as they are copyrighted (darn those Disney people). She did tell me that they had some Tinkerbell plastic rings that she could put on the cake.

The cake turned out way better than I would have ever expected. It tasted really moist and the fresh strawberries were delicious (thanks so much Nipper's corner for making my daughter's time with her birthmom so special).

She was thrilled with her tinkerbell rings.

I've broken this deal down into two sections. The first section will show you the items that I threw in that I didn't need to create the overage to pay for the items that I did need.

I'm sending Matt on his first shop tonight. To be continued . . .

Oh, good job getting a free cake.

Kathy, leave me a post here and let me know how it goes for Matt. That's pretty exciting. Nice to see the men hopping on the bandwagon.

That is a beautiful cake, and a fantastic price for feeding 8 for a cookout.

I have to buy a cake day after tomorrow. For my 19 year old son...guess I better leave off the pink roses, lol.

Thanks for the awesome post!!! I'm new to your blog and love it. Where do you get your Food Lion coupons? Also, I live in Murfreesboro. How would you recommend I go about finding a recycle bin to get the papers? Thanks for any info.

Tshanina, I get them at Food Lion. :)

You can go online to find out where your local recycling bins are. We've asked my friend Matt to do a guest post on the recycling bins in this area. Stay tuned!

The shop didn't go as planned. I didn't remember that he had a deacon meeting last night so he didn't go. I'll plan another one for him soon. And of course I'll let you know. You doing HT anymore? Super Doubles next week . . .

Kathy, not doing HT anymore. I won't go back. There customer service is just awful. I will, however, go to Kroger if they match it.

Jessica, glad you're enjoying the site. I got the $1/5 at Food Lion. It's a tearpad.

Another great "shop" and a beautiful cake!

starbucksgirl said...

Jessica, you will have overage on the sugar but you will have to pay for .85 cents of the Kool Aid.

Cheapster, that cake was amazing. I just ate the rest of it tonight and it was even better than the first day that we bought it. They really do make delicious cakes.

Ok, you have me determined to do this for my sons b-day 8/19! Getting a large dino cake, $50+ bucks. Already traded for a bunch of knox coupons, lol! Add that to $x/xx coupons, I am gonna try to get at least half that off. :)

starbucksgirl said...

TanyaW - when you say that you traded for Knox coupons I hope you mean that you traded for the $4/1 internet printable coupon. The insert coupon will not work for overage on the Knox Gelatin because of the wording on the coupon.

Yep! Thanks for looking out for me though. :)
